“Alongside those of 1949 and 1990, this federal election is one of the three most important in the history of the Republic.”

This was the assessment of military expert Prof. Dr. Carlo Masala, speaking at the BayBG Turnaround Spring Talks at the end of March 2025. He gave an impressive overview of the many challenges the new federal government will have to overcome.

Masala stated that Germany is currently experiencing the “dark side of globalization”, after decades in which globalization was exploited extensively for increasing prosperity. In terms of foreign policy, Germany now finds itself in a vacuum, as it has taken what Masala called a “vacation from history” since 1990.

Drawing a line from the remilitarization of the Rhineland to the current state of NATO and the struggle for a new world order, Masala provided detailed insights into today’s military conflicts and geopolitical crisis hotspots. A fascinating lecture, followed by an equally engaging Q&A session.
